A Federal Construction Standard for Manufactured Homes
Today's manufactured homes are not built according to whatever standards a manufacturer chooses.
Manufactured homes constructed in the United States are required to comply with the federal HUD Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards, commonly called the HUD Code.
The HUD Code establishes requirements covering important aspects of home construction, including:
Structural design
Fire safety
Electrical systems
Plumbing
Heating, cooling and ventilation
Energy conservation
Transportation and durability
Overall construction and safety requirements
Homes that comply with the HUD Code receive certification labels indicating that they were constructed in accordance with the applicable federal standards.
The HUD Code has also been updated over time as construction technology, safety requirements, and energy standards have evolved.
For buyers, the important point is simple:
A modern manufactured home is an engineered home built to established federal construction and safety standards.
